Street-Art in Minsk

A year ago, if someone had asked me about any interesting places in Minsk, I would have been really confused, not knowing what to say.

Now I know about the sites like TripAdvisor. Let’s see what it would advise us on “where to go in Minsk”. Wow, a square, a memorial, a park, another square, two more memorials. That creates an impression that there is nothing to see but very standard things.

However, there are a few more things that I found more interesting that going to yet another museum. One of them is the wall of Victor Tsoy. I’ve mentioned it in my very first post.

Let’s see what Lonely Planet tells about this city (well, apparently, about the whole country):

Belarus allows the chance to visit a Europe with minimal advertising and no litter or graffiti.

Well, now it is obvious for me that the person who wrote this visited the capital of Belarus for 3-5 days and probably didn’t go anywhere outside the touristic places. I won’t speak about litter in this post, let’s discuss graffiti.

So, let’s get acquainted with street art of Minsk.

Why not to paint on the embassy building?

  1. Now isn’t that amazing!) I come to Minsk every now and then but I had no idea there’s so much street art there! Some of it looks really beautiful, artistic) It must have been done by someone with a lot of talent. Thank you for the insight!

  2. Fabulous post. Here in Vancouver, we have some street art and it’s called graffiti and it’s against the law to paint or spray-paint public spaces. Any time it appears, it’s quickly painted over. So you only see it in run-down places, or by the railroad tracks or places that are difficult to access. Consequently, it’s become an act of resistance and rebellion to put up graffiti. Too bad, I wish we could have some beautiful, meaningful art like Minsk.

    1. I am glad you’ve liked it. As for me, I lived in Minsk for about a year and didn’t even know that there is something like these arts. About 3 months ago, I’ve started having walks to the districts I’ve never visited before and eventually, got a collection of paintings to post.

      1. Hello and Greetings! And thank you for the reminder of the Osgemeos public art installation. The murals are a pretty addition to the landscape that helped disguise a blighted view. 🙂

  4. What a great post about street art in Minsk. Loved it and wished I would have seen that Minsk while there. I enjoyed the monuments and the cultural park out of the city but do not really feel like I saw a real place, alive today, contemporary. I reblogged your post saying another reason not to do a traditional guided tour but rather ask around before and when you get someplace. Thanks, great post. I’m following from now on. My MInsk post is on mneset.me.
